    This is an extremely rare and precious wine with a mere 200 half bottles produced. The wine is virtually impossible to locate. If you are however lucky enough to stumble across a miniature bottle of the 2007 Sanpetrolo, your taste buds and your brain cells will be greatly stimulated. This is both a hedonistic and an intellectual passito wine that grabs your immediate attention thanks to full-force aromas of candied fruit, brown sugar, caramel and butterscotch. The blend of fruit is equal parts Malvasia and Trebbiano Toscano, and the blend is aged for nine interminable years in small oak vessels. The wine is made with low alcohol (just 10%) and very high residual sugar (above 300 grams per liter).

    Absolutely amazing, the 2005 San Petrolo (375-milliliter) is a stunning achievement that offers a memorable experience. If you like sugar and sweetness, this syrupy dessert wine is a meal in itself. The bouquet offers crème caramel with honey-coated almond, candied apricot, white grape raisin, maple syrup and brown sugar. The mouthfeel is thick and viscous, and you can feel that silky sleekness spread clear over the palate with the grace of a satin sheet. The wine offers a little sliver of heaven in the glass. Given the high residual sugar, this wine should hold for many years, if not decades.

    The divine 2004 San Petrolo opens with a dark amber-chestnut color and unforgettable aromatic intensity that aspires to cooked brown sugar, maple syrup, toasted almond, raw natural honey straight from the honeycomb, caramel and hazelnut. It is enormously sweet and sticky in the mouth and presents glue-like density on the finish. This Vino da Tavola expression is made with equal parts Malvasia and Trebbiano. Fruit is dried in small trays (just three clusters per container) for six months and fermented in caratelli, the traditional small barrel used for Vinsanto. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2035. Luca Sanjust has embarked on a whole slew of new projects at his beautiful estate located in the southeast part of Chianti, near the Chianti Classico boarder. His first priority is returning to a cru-specific philosophy. He sees his top wine, for example, less as an expression of Merlot than an expression of the Galatrona single-vineyard. The Boggina site is planted to Sangiovese, and Luca explains that this spectacular vineyard has existed since the 1700s.     The 2003 San Petrolo (375 ml) is a drop dead amazing dessert wine. It is hard to expand beyond that statement. The bouquet is incredibly generous and layered with dried figs, prune, caramel, toasted almond, maple syrupy and raw honey. It shows an impressively thick consistency with super extraction and glossy glycerin that is both compelling and long lasting. The wine sits heavy over the palate with meaningful intensity and opulent sweetness. It's hard to image how grape berries can be made into a wine of this outstanding enormity. The workmanship is outstanding and impossible to duplicate.

    The 2002 Sanpetrolo is an unusual dessert wine made in a style with deliberately high residual sugar. Hazelnuts, cinnamon, burnt sugar and caramel flow from this plush, expansive wine. The Sanpetrolo shows marvelous balance for such a big wine. The cold 2002 vintage was ideally suited for this style, as the wine has retained a surprising level of acidity that serves to counterbalance its decidedly opulent, full-throttle personality. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. Proprietor Luca Sanjust and his team did a terrific job with these 2008s considering the challenging nature of the year. The summer was cool and damp, which resulted in medium-bodied wines with less of the sheer stuffing of years like 2006 and 2007 but exceptional overall balance.
