The 2016 Malbec Reserve is a blend of 89% Malbec and 11% Cab Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it gives pronounced notes of baked black cherries, blackberry pie and warm blueberries with touches of violets, spice cake and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied, rich and decadent, the palate has a firm, grainy texture and oodles of freshness, finishing with fantastic length. 379 cases were made.

The 2015 Malbec Reserve is made up of 89% Malbec and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 28 months in 56% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up notes of crushed black cherries, black raspberries and red plums with touches of pencil lead, violets, baking spices and cedar. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a firm frame of grainy tannins and a lively line lifting the perfumed fruit to a long finish. 445 cases produced, to be released in winter 2019.

Possessing just a dollop of Merlot (5%), the 2014 Malbec Reserve has an inky purple-black color and is scented of cassis, dried mulberries, warm plums and baked cherries with hints of baking spices and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, it has a chewy backbone and relatively restrained fruit in the mouth, finishing with savory/earthy notes.

Chateau St. Jean has always done a reasonably good job with Malbec, and the 2004 Reserve (85% Malbec, 10% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a well-made, but simple and one-dimensional effort. Tel. (707) 833-4134; Fax (707) 833-4200

The 2003 Malbec Reserve reveals those chocolaty, deep raspberry and blackberry notes with some underlying roasted herbs, smoke, and licorice.
