The 2016 Red Blend Cuvee Eighty Five Fifty Five is a blend of 26% Malbec, 23% Merlot, 18% Syrah, 18% Petit Verdot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes charging out of the gate with rambunctious blackberry preserves, baked plums and Black Forest cake notes plus hints of cracked black pepper, smoked meats and black olives with some spice box in the background. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling black berry preserves and savory layers, framed by firm, rounded tannins and finishing on a lingering peppery note. 645 cases were made.

The 2015 Red Blend Cuvee Eighty Five Fifty Five is blended of 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 18% Malbec, 15% Petit Verdot, 14% Merlot and 5% Syrah, aged 26 months in 36% new French oak. Very deep purple-black in color, it gives up crushed red and black currants, black cherries and mulberries with hints of bay leaves, cigar box and damp soil. The palate is full-bodied, firm and grainy with lovely freshness cutting through the intense layers, finishing long and chewy. 1,211 cases produced.

Blended of 25% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot, 12% Syrah and 6% Malbec, the 2014 Red Blend Cuvee Eighty Five Fifty Five sports a deep garnet-purple color and nose of warm mulberries, crushed plums, black cherry tart and spice box with hints of menthol, bay leaves and toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is rich and plush, lifted by a lively backbone and finishing long.

The 2009 Red Blend Cuvee Eighty-Five Fifty-Five, essentially the second wine of the flagship Cinq Cepages, is a big, mouth-filling red laced with dark berries, savory herbs, tobacco, licorice and menthol. A rich, hearty wine, the Eighty-Five Fifty-Five is best suited for the dinner table, where the firm tannins will stand up to a rich variety of foods. In 2009, the blend is 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Syrah and 4% Malbec. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. This range from Chateau St. Jean is packed with values. Many of these wines, especially at the entry-level, are made in large enough production to be relatively easy to find. The 2008 Red Blend Cuvee Eighty-Five Fifty-Five is a blend of 47% Merlot, 19% Petit Verdot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah, 10% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc. It is a very pretty wine laced with dark red fruit, flowers, licorice and tar. All of the elements come together beautifully in this plush, inviting wine. The Eighty-Five Fifty-Five is made from lots that don’t make it into the flagship Cinq Cepages. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.
