The 2015 Madreselva is a blend of equal parts Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety is fermented separately, and only after they are racked into small oak barrels for aging (up to 20 months) are they blended according to the proportions that are deemed ideal for the corresponding vintage. The blended wine then has time to integrate during the 12 months it spends in the bottle. This is a robust mid-weight wine that boasts dark richness and concentration at its core with blackberry, prune and dark plum. Spice, tar and toasted oak show good balance. Some 25,000 bottles of Madreselva were released.

Made with equal parts Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, the 2014 Madreselva comes across as thick, brooding and concentrated. Black fruit, spice and bitter chocolate all play important roles. The bouquet is layered and intense. Although this red shows thick extraction, the finish offers moderate length and low-key complexity.

The 2012 Madreselva is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. This is a dense and brooding wine that opens to heavy tones of pencil shaving, toasted oak, Indian spice and dark jammy fruit. This blended red from Lazio shows moderate elegance and linearity with polished tannins and a thick textural presence.

This Bordeaux blend from Lazio, in central Italy, offers gorgeous intensity and ripe aromas of dark spice, black mineral, clove, blackberry, cherry cola, leather and espresso bean. It shows a modern, oak-aged side and loads of ripe fruit flavors on the long, spicy close. ——M.L.(3/1/2011)—— 91
