The 2014 Susumaniello Serre is a plump and richly endowed red wine. It only sees six months of oak aging although those aromas of cinnamon and allspice rise to the top and mask much of the fruit found below. Like other wines from this weak vintage, the oak tones seem oversized compared to the fruit. The finish is sweet and chewy.

The 2012 Susumaniello Serre is one of the surprise hits from Puglia this year. This IGT Salento wine is aged in barrique for six months. This results in extra softness and plushness that perfectly marries the opulence of the fruit on hand. Oak spice and toasted almond are followed by dark berry and blackcurrant. Chocolate, leather and balsam herb add to the wine's overall intensity. Serre also delivers an attractive level of extraction and textural richness. It's a modern wine and a great value at this affordable price point.
