The 2013 Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva Blasio is actually a blend of 90% Cannonau with 10% complementary red grapes. This is the top-shelf wine in the Cantine di Dolianova portfolio and it shows. This wine offers a deeper level of complexity and nuance with wild berry aromas piled high onto tar, scorched earth and a touch of pretty balsam herb. That complexity has been carefully nudged along, but the wine's age and those elegant tertiary notes are already beginning to show. Pair this wine with game meats, such as a coniglio alla cacciatora made with big green olives. Some 50,000 bottles were made.

The 2012 Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva Blasio is packaged in one of those super heavy glass bottles that always feels like overkill, especially in mid-pour. The wine evidently seeks to make a statement, and indeed it does, with dark fruit aromas followed by earth, moist chewing tobacco and cured meat. Evolved aromas of cedar wood and cigar box have taken hold of the bouquet at this moment. Yet this remains a juicy and succulent red wine with the tannic structure and bold texture to pair with heavier dishes based on lamb or steak. It's worth underlining the wine's attractive price point.
