Sold at an incredible price and representing a very good value, the 2016 Tarima is pure Monastrell on limestone soils from Alicante, cropped from a very dry year. It fermented in open-top vats and matured in third and fourth use French oak barrels and oak staves for six months. It has clean varietal character, tree bark, black fruit, with good ripeness and concentration, without excess and nicely integrated spices from the contact with oak. An approachable and pleasant Monastrell. 180,000 bottles produced.

The 2013 Tarima sees the same upbringing as the Tarima organic cuvée; it's a stainless steel-fermented and aged red. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as notes of wet rocks, raspberries, cherries and blue-colored mountain fruits. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.

The deep ruby-hued, clean 2012 Tarima (100% non-organic Monastrell) is more simple than its organic sibling, although it, too, shows some chalkiness because of the limestone soils that dominate this area. Bodegas Volver, a joint venture between importer Jorge Ordonez and Rafael Canizares, produces wines from huge holdings of 252 acres in La Mancha, 457 acres in Alicante and 125 acres in Jumilla. The 2011 Tarima made from non-organic Monastrell is sensational. From an area dominated by cooperatives, this full-bodied blockbuster boasts plenty of blue and black fruit notes, impressive purity and an enticing texture as well as length. It is hard to believe that wines such as this can be found for under $10 a bottle. Bodega Volver, a joint project between Rafael Canizares and Jorge Ordonez, produces wines from three appellations, La Mancha, Alicante and Jumilla. Readers will need to take note of the nearly identical cuvees, some of which are made from organic grapes and others from non-organic grapes. That information is clearly marked on the labels. Slightly more expensive are the 2010 and 2009 Tarima Hill. These cuvees come from the winery’s oldest vines (20 acres of ungrafted vines that were planted in 1935) planted on the highest elevations.
