The 2012 Wrongo Dongo is 100% Mourvedre from Jumilla, an area that Jorge Ordonez was the first to exploit and bring to the attention of American wine consumers. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as loads of blackberry and black cherry fruit, sweet tannin, and a naked, in-your-face, flavorful, hedonistic style. No oak is used in this effusive, delicious wine’s upbringing. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years. Bodegas Volver, a joint venture between importer Jorge Ordonez and Rafael Canizares, produces wines from huge holdings of 252 acres in La Mancha, 457 acres in Alicante and 125 acres in Jumilla. Named after a well-known Washington, DC wine merchant, Jim Arsenault, the 2011 Wrongo Dongo is 100% Mourvedre from the appellation of Jumilla, a viticultural region first discovered by Jorge Ordonez. This totally tank-fermented and aged effort is one of the top bargains in the wine world. Deep ruby/purple-colored with notes of blue and black fruits, crushed rocks, earth, forest floor and pepper, this medium to full-bodied red over-delivers. Since its inception, it has been a terrific bargain. Drink it over the next several years. Bodega Volver, a joint project between Rafael Canizares and Jorge Ordonez, produces wines from three appellations, La Mancha, Alicante and Jumilla. Readers will need to take note of the nearly identical cuvees, some of which are made from organic grapes and others from non-organic grapes. That information is clearly marked on the labels. Slightly more expensive are the 2010 and 2009 Tarima Hill. These cuvees come from the winery’s oldest vines (20 acres of ungrafted vines that were planted in 1935) planted on the highest elevations. The 2010 Wrongo Dongo, (a phrase made famous by the legendary Diamond Jim Arseneault), is a 100% Monastrell cuvee made from Jumilla grapes. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, it offers up a fruity nose with plenty of spice and floral notes.
