The 2019 Petit Verdot, from a single vineyard on sand and stone soils, has the usual 14.5% alcohol but again shows serious, harmonious, Atlantic and elegant with herbal and peppery notes but with the good ripeness and clout from a warm and dry year. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in new French and American oak (25%) barrels for 17 months. 2,520 bottles were filled in May 2021.

The 2018 Petit Verdot is from a moderate year when the grapes achieved even higher ripeness, and the finished wine has 15% alcohol and more freshness. It's a powerful Petit Verdot with plenty of tannin, concentration and power. It has an atypical nose that is exuberant, a bit grapey and almost tropical, developing notes of asphalt over time and the fruit also turning darker as the wine sat in the glass. This wine is almost always about structure, but this vintage feels unusually aromatic, with notes of peach and sweet spices in the beginning. The palate shows the varietal energy, with a soft entry and then a big kick with the structure. It finishes with notes of black tea and licorice. 2,030 bottles were filled in May 2020 after 16 moths in new oak barrels, 25% of them American.

The 2017 Petit Verdot shows very serious, harmonious, Atlantic and elegant with herbal and peppery notes, certainly not lacking ripeness (it's 14.5% alcohol, lower than 2016) and with a finer mouthfeel, rounder tannins and a more balanced palate. It feels like this wine behaves better in warmer years. 2,921 bottles were filled in May 2019.

They think the 2016 Petit Verdot is the gentler vintage of this wine in recent times, and I agree. The long cycle allowed the grape to ripen fully, but like I saw with the Cabernet Sauvignon, that seems to have turned the wine creamier and sleeker with a luxurious texture and less varietal character. It's polished and tasty, with ripe fruit and plenty of spice. The palate is polished, with a full body and abundant dusty tannins. It needs powerful food. 1,044 bottles were filled in May 2018.

Coffee and tar notes give this thick red an austere character, framing a core of currant, licorice and loamy earth flavors. Well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity keep this balanced, in a muscular style. Decant.
