Ratcheting up the level of concentration, power, and structure is the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by smoky, earthy, black currant, licorice, and cigar smoke-like aromas, a beautiful texture, opulence, and an up-front style that will provide immediate gratification. Consume it over the next decade.
The ebullient David Del Dotto recently purchased the 50-acre Pinot Noir vineyards of Bill and Joan Smith on the Sonoma Coast, so I assume readers can look forward to some Pinot Noir cuvees from Del Dotto in the future. The estate has revealed a remarkable ability to attract tourists given what is said by many to be the finest winemaking tour in Napa Valley. They have also launched the brilliant marketing idea of allowing consumers to taste different wines in various types of American and French cooperage, then having their favorite wine bottled specifically for them. The following wines are not part of that program.
