A very good effort from this winery, which continues to raise the quality of their portfolio, the 2003 Pinot Noir Califa Chamisal Vineyards boasts a dark ruby color as well as a sweet nose of raspberries, cherries, plums, and a hint of wood, a sweet, expansive texture, excellent purity, and a long, layered finish. Dark and concentrated, with a rich array of wild berry, boysenberry and huckleberry fruit that's dense and plush, supported by firm, ripe, chewy tannins. This broad-shouldered wine should benefit from short-term cellaring. Best from 2006 through 2011. 890 cases made. -JL

This is a better wine in every sense than the winery’s regular Pinot. It’s darker and richer in fruit, with waves of cherry, pomegranate, cola, mocha, vanilla and smoke flavors cascading over the palate. Despite the size, it’s silky and elegant.——S.H.(11/15/2005)—— 92
