In un-oaked versions like the Zantho 2003 Zweigelt, this indigenous Austrian red variety exhibits an aromatic combination of candied red fruit and bracing freshness not unlike that of Zinfandel, and a sheer juiciness, along with warm spiciness and notes of white pepper that are reminiscent of Grenache. With medium body and sappy red fruits reverberating in the mouth, this excellent value commands your attention and merits a second glass. The finish is juicy and full of fruit, if slightly simple. St. Laurent (in Austria characteristically written without the period and pronounced “SAHNKT-lawrent”) is a crossing of mysterious origin thought to involve Pinot Noir.
